Showtime: LSU's Spectacular Pistol Pete

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum
Thu, June 20, 2024 - Sat, October 19, 2024

During his record-shattering career at LSU (1967–70), the incomparable Peter Press Maravich, better known as “Pistol Pete,”  captivated basketball fans not only with his incredible scoring ability but also with his sensational showmanship. He averaged 44.2 points per game in three seasons while playing for his father Press Maravich, then the Tigers’ head coach. The “ooohs and aaahs ” came loud and often as Pete astounded fans, opponents, and even teammates with his incredible ball-handling and passing ability and an array of freestyle moves that mystified defenders.

This exhibition explores the life and legacy of Pistol Pete through the images of John Musemeche and Musemeche Photography in Baton Rouge. John Musemeche, a former sportswriter and photographer for The Morning Advocate, had a front-row perspective and back-stage access to Pete and his dad. In 1969, Musemeche published Maravich, the first book about the “wizard of aahs.” The still-active photographer and his son, Rob, are regarded among Louisiana's premier sports photographers. John Musemeche’s reflections on Maravich also play a key role in filmmaker Drew Tewell’s short documentary about  Pistol Pete, “We Were Fans,” which is included in this exhibition.
