Right to Education

Louisiana Civil Rights Museum

As early as the 1840’s, free people of color and formerly enslaved people of Louisiana made significant advancements in the right to education. Their commitment to literacy and full citizenship resulted in the 1868 Louisiana Constitution, which declared all men as equal. Though this legally ended segregation in education, four elementary school girls bravely faced desegregation in New Orleans classrooms more than 80 years later.
