Fri, Aug 15, 2025
12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Natchitoches
Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum

Bring your lunch and join us for a fascinating talk by Dr. Kathleen Byrd on the transformative years of Natchitoches from 1803 to 1840. Unlike most rural French communities, Natchitoches held a unique role in early American expansion, thanks to its location on the frontier and the early presence of a military fort, Indian agency, and federal trading post. Dr. Byrd will explore the city's role in preventing war on the Spanish-American frontier, its negotiations with Native nations, and its place in westward migration and filibustering efforts. Dr. Byrd is a retired director of the School of Social Sciences at NSU and formerly served as Louisiana’s state archaeologist. This free event is open to the public.
