Notes

Plate 7 (2 sheets), from "A General Atlas." Standard symbols of the Americas adorn the rococo-style device framing this map's title cartouche. A quiver filled with arrows hangs from the shoulder of a seated female figure representing America. An alligator looms menacingly behind her while what appears to be a beaver peers from below. The male figure on the right, also symbolizing America, holds in his hands a mountain lion. Another animal commonly associated with America was the parrot, here seen just above the male figure's left shoulder. Two "singerie" monkeys, one of them atop a third quiver and bows, flank the top curves. Native to South America, this type of Monkey often adorned New World maps.
