Accessibility
The Louisiana State Museum is committed to making all of our sites, exhibitions, and programs welcoming, enjoyable, and educational for everyone. We continually work to improve access and invite your feedback. If you have questions about your visit or need accommodations, please contact us at 504.568.6968 or email [email protected].
Physical Access
- Wheelchair Access – All of our museums are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers via elevators or ramps, with the exception of certain National Historic Landmark buildings where full access is not possible due to historic preservation. These include Madame John’s Legacy, the 1850 House, and the E.D. White Historic Site.
- Elevators & Restrooms – Accessible restrooms are available at most sites. Elevators serve all public floors where available.
- Parking & Seating – Accessible parking is available near most museum entrances. Please note that museums in the French Quarter do not offer on-site public parking; however, nearby loading zones are available for convenient drop-off. Benches and seating areas are provided in many galleries, and staff are happy to assist.
Service Animals
Service animals, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, are welcome in all museum buildings. Animals must remain on a leash and under the owner’s control at all times. If a service animal is barking excessively, aggressive, or not housebroken, the handler may be asked to remove the animal from the museum.
Sensory Accessibility
Some exhibitions include sound, video, or interactive elements that may be stimulating for sensitive visitors. Guests are welcome to bring headphones, sunglasses, or other aids for comfort. Staff can help direct visitors to quieter areas if needed.
The museum also offers sensory-friendly materials and programs, and we are developing additional resources with input from our audiences. Sensory-friendly events are held throughout the year—please check our Calendar of Events for upcoming dates.
Interpretive & Intellectual Access
We are dedicated to making our interpretive content accessible as well as accurate.
