Curatorial Notes

See Phillips, Vol. 1, p. 575, #1151. Label from 1996 exhibit: In this map, Sanson copied much from de Laët's 1625 "Nieuwe Wereld." It depicts the Bay of the Holy Spirit, as well as a mountain range separating the Gulf Coast from the northern interior of the continent. From narratives of the de Soto expedition cartographers believed that a mountain range extended from east to west above the Gulf of Mexico. Although this nonexistent barrier was featured in de Laët's map, it was not as all-encompassing as those seen in this work. This map was also important for information presented here for the first time: a more realistic depiction of the Great lakes.
