In order to eliminate stagmant water in Bayou Teche (caused by the construction of the Ruth Canal near St. Martinville) and stimulate industry in the area, Iberia Parish officials contracted for the construction of a canal near Loreauville to connect Lake Fausse Point and Bayou Teche.
