Notes

Although published five decades later, this map is remarkably similar to Guillaume Deslisle's 1703 "Carte de Mexique et de la Floride." This later rendition does not include California and features several insets not seen on Deslisle's original. Includes cartouche, bottom left, illustrating naval battle, and commercial activities in the New World--an illustration adapted from Homann's 1720 "Regni Mexicani Seu Novæ Hispaniæ, Ludovicianæ…" Homann's apprentice was Matthew Seutter, father-in-law of Tobias Ltter, the maker of this map. Sometime after Seutter's death, Lotter took over the family business, erased his father-in-law's name from old printing plates, and substituted his own.
