Label from 1996 exhibit of 1997.078.118: Spanish law made it mandatory that Spanish goods bound for the New World must enter the viceroyalty only at Veracruz. This map shows the geographical relationship between that major Mexican port and New Orleans. On January 11, 1784, the Spanish brig "El Cazador (the Hunter) left Veracruz loaded with specie for New Orleans. On the way, the vessel sank during a winter storm, its treasure consigned to the sea until it was discovered in August 1993 by fishermen aboard the "Mistake."
