Notes
The title cartouche of this map includes many standard European representations of the Americas. A child wears a Brazilian Indian feather headdress and skirt and holds a bow. The feathered skirt does not precisely conform to known Brazilian attire. Some scholars believe that European artists found it difficult to imagine people who did not wear clothing similar to their own and thus invented this form of feather skirt from explorer's descriptions. Ingots of silver and gold as well as indigenous New World products such as cotton, tobacco, and sugar cane complete the illustration.
