Nice color. See Phillips, Vol. 1, p. 329, #583. Label from 1996 exhibit: The "Mississippi Bubble" and the financial ruin it caused for many Europeans is illustrated by images surrounding the title cartouche of this map. To the left hopeful investors purchase stock in the Company of the Indies from two cherubs and a standing female figure. The banner above her reads, "What is hope?" A cherub holding an empty pouch hovers above the people on the left, who appear to be in great distress. One distraught individual prepares to commit suicide by falling onto a sword. The banner hanging from the trumpet held by the winged female figure situated above the whole announces "God is second." Note that the second female representation beneath her holds a cornucopia from which fabulous riches flow in the direction of those on the left. The banner directly above her reminds the reader that "boldness brings fortune."
