Label from 1996 exhibit: One of the curious features of this map is the large body of water along the west coast of the North American continet. Early explorers of the area often exaggerated the size of San Fransisco bay, here named "mer ou baye de l'ouest" (lake or bay of the west.)

Notes

Plate 32, from Lattré and Delalain's 1771 - 1783 "Atlas Moderne ou Collection de Cartes sur Toutes les parties du Globe Terrestre." Depicts a great sea, labelled Mer de L' Ouest (Sea of the West) draining into the Pacific Ocean.
