Exhibition label: "Note that the South pole is located at the center of this map, although the continental land mass of Antarctica is not depicted. We can see that south is not always depicted at the bottom of a map. Although the continent was not fully explored at the time this map was published, the early explorations of captain James Cook and James Wedell are noted. In 1911 Norwegian explorer Roals Amundsen became the first European to reach the South Pole.
