Notes

Plate #18 from 1896 pamphlet titled, Document No. 101, 54th Congress, 1st session, U. S. Senate; “Certain information relative to the lands constituting the beds of Cross Lake, Soda Lake, Clear Lake, Ferry Lake, Caddo Lake, extending from the Texas state line to or near the city of Shreveport, La."

Documents response to request for information concerning property ownership of land constituting the beds of Cross Lake, Soda Lake, Clear lake, Ferry Lake, Caddo Lake, near Shreveport, La. The Senate was attempting to determine if these sections of North Western La. were part of land conveyed to the State of Louisiana under the terms of the swamp land acts of 1849 and 1850 and whether or not any part of this area was claimed by the State of Louisiana , the Caddo parish levee board, or private parties.
The report concluded that parts of the lake beds were indeed claimed by the state of Louisiana and certain individuals, but not by the local levee board. Thus, this pamphlet and its maps represent the effects of draining Louisiana swamp and lake areas during the mid nineteenth century.
