Sculpture in the Visual Arts Collection
The Louisiana State Museums has approximately 250 sculptures in its Visual Arts Collection.
Before the twentieth century, sculpture was not a popular media in Louisiana. Philippe Garbeille was one of the few sculptors working in the city during the nineteenth century. Architectural sculpture became important during the 1930s, with artists such as Angela Gregory receiving commissions for public buildings. Self-taught wood carver Pierre Joseph Landry worked in the folk art tradition of representing daily life, which witnessed a renaissance in New Orleans during the 1970s and 1980s with visionary artists such as Cyril and Ivy Billiot, and David Butler.
