Scrapbook Collection at the Louisiana Historical Center

Another collection housed in the Louisiana Historical Center and frequently used by researchers is the extensive scrapbook collection. There are over 200 scrapbooks in the collection. The scrapbooks are divided into two groups; those compiled by individuals which range from 1852–1956 and those compiled from 1920–1940 which were put together by the WPA also known as the Works Progress Administration. Both sets of scrapbooks are a great source of information and Louisiana history. The WPA scrapbooks are subject-related and primarily consist of newspaper clippings, flyers, and magazines that relate to the subject the scrapbooks are about. The following are examples of some of the WPA scrapbooks in the collection; "Rivers, Harbors, & Levees," "Sports & Hobbies," "Interior Decorating," "Centennial of the Louisiana Purchase," and "Huey P. Long."

The scrapbooks that were compiled by individuals range from 1873–1942 and they include a collection of six scrapbooks from Joseph Jones M.D. documenting yellow fever, Board of Sanitation, health, and forty-nine scrapbooks from Walter Parker documenting Progressive Union, Louisiana Commerce, Industry & Agriculture, Flood Control, Louisiana Waterways, Immigration, 1915 Hurricane, & the 1905 Yellow Fever Epidemic. Also included in the individual scrapbook collection, are personal scrapbooks from Claudia Sherman, 1904, Mrs. Charles Lestart, 1894–1942, and several schoolgirl memorabilia scrapbooks from 1875–1937 that are of specific interest to researchers studying women's studies.
