Etiénne Constant Carlin
French, 1808–1869
Carlin appears to have had academic training. He appears to have arrived in New Orleans about 1840. Apart from his paintings, he is not documented until 1851. He clearly followed Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (1790–1866) and Jacques Amans (1801–1888), demonstrating a high degree of competency. Most of the paintings in the Louisiana State Museum's collections are members of Carlin's family.
