John L. Boqueta de Woiseri
French, fl. 1797–1815
Boqueta de Woiseri, a French engraver, hair worker, art teacher, geographer, and engineer, may have been in New Orleans as early as 1798. On November 5, 1803, he completed View of New Orleans. Taken from the Plantation of the Marigny, a well-known print. By February of 1804, he was in Philadelphia, remaining a few years, and in New York until 1811. Little else is known of his career. Like Audubon, he was familiar with current painting styles but shows evidence of being largely self-taught.
